Participation at the 30th Panhellenic conference academic libraries
A joint paper between the ENGINEER team member and the Library of the University along with researchers from the Keryneia municipality was presented earlier today at the 30th Panhellenic conference academic libraries. The conference theme was “Reaching into the future, expanding boundaries, connecting communities” and was held between 23-25 October 2024 at the War Museum of Athens, Amphitheater of Ioannis Kapodistrias.
The joint paper was entitled as “Revival of Kyrenia through the utilization of a web-based geographic information system (GIS), social media, and ATHENA digital repository”. This work focuses on creating an innovative web application for the Municipality of Kyrenia in Cyprus, aiming to preserve and promote the city’s cultural heritage before 1974. Using modern technologies, we created a web application that allows users to virtually navigate the streets, buildings, and religious monuments, both in their current state and as they were before 1974. This is achieved through photographic material initially posted by the public with the creation of the group “KYRENIA STREETS” on the social media platform Facebook, processing this photographic material and information posted by residents of Kyrenia who lived there before 1974.
