CRDP Workshop in Coastal Heritage Vulnerability and Risk Assessment
Dr Athos Agapiou delivered an introductory presentation earlier today, on the potential of space-based observations in the field of cultural heritage. His talk focused on the application of satellite sensors and advanced image processing techniques for the documentation, preservation, and monitoring of cultural sites and landscapes.
He elaborated on how Earth Observation (EO) technologies can play a critical role in landscape monitoring, particularly in tracking environmental changes that may threaten cultural heritage sites, such as urban expansion, climate change, and natural disasters. The presentation highlighted the integration of multi-temporal satellite imagery and remote sensing tools to detect subtle changes over time, offering valuable data for heritage conservation efforts.
This presentation, titled “Earth Observation and Its Potential for Landscape Monitoring”, was part of the Honor Frost Foundation Workshop, organized by the University of Cyprus in Nicosia. The workshop brought together experts and scholars to discuss innovative methodologies in heritage management, with Agapiou’s contribution emphasizing the transformative role of space technologies in the preservation of our shared cultural history.
