NASA and Archaeology from Space symposium
Participation in a very interesting symposium organized by NASA was held recently. Dr Athos Agapiou joined the event with the talk “Sharing advancements in remote sensing archaeology in the Eastern Mediterranean”.
A few words about the symposium: The NASA History Office organized the symposium on NASA and Archaeology from Space in honor of NASA’s first ‘space archaeologist’, Dr. Tom Sever. Presentations included the past, present, or future of remote sensing in archaeology. Paper topics included the history of remote sensing in archaeology, results from previously funded NASA archaeology projects, the ethics of remote sensing in archaeology, GESI (gender, equity, and social inclusion) in remote sensing for archaeology, cutting-edge archaeological research that incorporates remote sensing, visions for the future of remote sensing in archaeology, among others. The symposium was held September 18-19, 2024, in Huntsville, Alabama, home of NASA Marshall Space Flight Center.
