Ultrasound acoustic measurements at Tombs of the Kings

On September 27th, Dr. Nicholas Kyriakides and Dr. Renos Votsis, members of the ENGINEER project, along with Ms. Panayiota Kadi, a technical engineer from the Laboratory Sector of the Public Works Department (LSPWD), visited the archaeological site of the Tombs of the Kings in Paphos. The purpose of the visit was to conduct non-destructive tests (NDT) on the monument to gather data essential for a subsequent structural assessment.

The team performed tests using an ultrasonic system based on the pulse velocity method to assess the mechanical properties and quality of the tomb’s material. Further data processing will provide insights into the material’s uniformity and help identify internal voids or cracks. In addition to the ultrasonic testing, a thermal imager was used to capture the tombs’ thermal signature.

Finally, data stored from previously installed temperature and relative humidity (RH) data loggers were collected.

All the data gathered will be further analyzed by the ENGINEER project partners and discussed at the upcoming annual consortium meeting in October 2024.
