Short-term staff exchange 2 (SE2) and Workshop 2 (W2), CUT team members visited Aveiro (WP4 and WP2)

CUT team had the opportunity to visit the University of Aveiro as part of the second short-term staff exchange (SE2) and Workshop 2 (W2). The CUT team was exposed to the UAVEIRO equipment while dedicated lectures were provided as part of the second workshop. The visit held as a 2-day event in Aveiro (Portugal), hosted by the University of Aveiro (UA). The above activities are implemented within the context of WP4 and WP2, respectively.

The UA team welcomed CUT staff at UA premises (Department of Materials and Ceramics Engineering) on Day 1. Prof. Alice Tavares Costa (local Principal Investigator) gave a welcome note and introduced the agenda of the 2-day workshop as well as the logistics of SE2. An online presentation followed by Prof. Dina D’Ayala and Henry Zhu from UCL (also participating in the project) entitled “Laboratory and in situ assessment of moisture behavior of building materials and elements”. The first part of Day 1 closed with a visit at UA laboratories where the members of the lab presented the scanning electron microscopy and introduced CUT staff to energy dispersive x-ray analysis (SEM-EDS) of materials. CUT members then visited a second laboratory dedicated to the analysis of mortars using x-ray diffraction and x-ray fluorescence. Before leaving UA premises to visit the case study location, a third laboratory was visited and a talk provided by Alexandre Bastos regarding analyses of metal corrosion and degradation progression. UA team then guided CUT staff to the case study at Paco da Ermida, Ilhavo where the goal is to assess the condition of a listed building. Several tests have been prepared to demonstrate the ways of assessing the building condition. CUT staff was introduced in the above methods and discussed similarities and differences between the two teams regarding the way these analyses are conducted. CUT staff then returned to UA premises and were guided around the laboratory where tests and analyses of mechanical properties of materials and structures are performed. Day 1 ended with a talk regarding the financial management of Horizon Europe Projects provided by a person of the administrative staff of UA.

Day 2 was entirely spent at the place of the case study at Paco da Ermida, Ilhavo. There, CUT staff had the chance to visit the area of the listed building both from the exterior and interior of the building. Then an illustration of the survey and assessment instruments for building assessment was provided and a flapjack test as well as a resistivity analysis were performed in place by UA team consisting of Alice Tavares, Anibal Costa, Hugo Rodrigues and Jorge Fonseca.
